The Proceedings of the American Society for Psychical Research is the scholarly record of the American attempt to bring experimental method to bear on mediumship, telepathy and the question of whether the human personality survives bodily death. Its pages are thick with the language of the seance room — mediums, trances, controls, materialisations, clairvoyance — but that language belongs to the phenomena being tested rather than to a doctrine being preached. The characteristic voice of the series is the investigator ruling out trickery: measuring the height of a window, timing an observation, weighing what a witness could actually have seen. Hypnotism and suggestion form a second research front, and the psychology of the subliminal self, drawn from the work of Frederic Myers, supplies much of the series' technical vocabulary. Founded in the tradition of Henry Sidgwick and Myers and directed for many years by James Hyslop, the American Proceedings is the sibling of the British Society for Psychical Research's own Proceedings, and it belongs to the history of psychical research rather than to Spiritualism proper.
